A Father’s Life-Saving Gift: Kidney Donation Brings New Hope to Daughter Battling Serious Condition
Every parent dreams of their children living healthy, happy lives. For Karen Rodas and Paul Bybkin, that dream was shattered when they lost their first child, Nathaniel, just 36 hours after birth. Nathaniel was born with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), a genetic disorder that causes cysts to form in the kidneys, leading to kidney failure.
In 2013, the couple welcomed their daughter, Maddy, but joy quickly turned to worry when she was diagnosed with the same condition. Maddy’s abdomen became so swollen that it resembled that of a woman nine months pregnant. The devastating diagnosis brought fear, but this time there was hope.
Maddy’s life was saved when her father, Paul, decided to donate one of his kidneys. Before the transplant, Maddy’s condition left her constantly fatigued, spending more time in hospitals than at home. Doctors told the family that Maddy’s best chance at a normal life depended on finding a matching donor. Fortunately, her father was the perfect match.
“My nerves were on edge with Paul and Maddy, two of my most precious loved ones, undergoing surgery,” Karen shared. But the operation was a success, and both Maddy and Paul recovered well.
“Paul’s kidney saved our little girl,” Karen said. “Now, she’s full of energy. Her once-swollen tummy is now just slightly rounded, and she’s a happy and healthy two-year-old.”
Paul humbly expressed that he simply did what any father would do. “We’ve been through an emotional journey, but donating my kidney to Maddy was just part of being a parent. Now we’re in a good place and can look forward to watching Maddy grow up as a happy and healthy little girl.”
While Maddy may need another transplant in the future, she now has years ahead to live her life to the fullest. This family’s strength and love shine as a beacon of hope for others facing similar battles.
